The Theory Test | learnr™
Before you can take the practical test, you have to pass the theory test.
The theory test
The first part involves a multiple choice test, where you will be asked 50 questions. You will have 57 minutes to complete the test, and you must score at least 43 (out of 50) to pass this part of the test.
The Hazard Perception test
The hazard perception test is designed to test your observarional skills. You will be shown 14 video clips, each containing at least one "developing hazard", the quicker you respond to a developing hazard the higher mark you can achieve (a maximum score of 5 is available for each hazard). You must score at least 44 out of 75 to pass this part of the test.
Sitting the theory test
You will need to take both parts of your driving licence with you to the test centre. Make sure you arrive before your test is due to start. You cannot take any belongings with you into the test, but you will be given access to a locker to securely store any belongings you did take with you, for the duration of the test. Once you have completed both parts of the test, you will only have a short wait before you know if you have passed and can sit your practical test, or if you need to resit the test. You will be given full instructions on the test before it begins.
Help and support
CD and DVD guides are available from most good retailers with sample theory tests and hazard perception tests. Play.com has a number of them, including Driving Theory Training for the Nintendo DS, Driving Test Success (DVD) and Driving Test Success for the PC, too. You might also want to pickup a copy of the highway code too, it is a very important book to have!
You may also want to ask your instructor, as many schools of motoring offer free guides and CD's for these tests.
