Before you can learn | learnr™
In order to learn to drive you need to hold a valid provisional driving licence for either Great Britain or Northern Ireland. You can apply for a provisional driving licence online, or by collecting a form from a Post Office branch. A provisional licence costs £50.
A provisional driving licence won't become valid until you are aged 17 years of age, if you are claiming disability living allowance, then your licence may become valid on your 16th birthday.
Driving without an instructor
If you wish to drive, as a learner, without the aid of an instructor, perhaps with a member of your family to gain additional experience then:
- You must be accompanied by another driver
- The accompanying driver must be over 21, and have held a licence for the same category car for at least three years.
- L plates must be displayed on the front and back of the car.
Further information relating to the legalities of learning and driving without an instructor can be found on the Direct Gov website.
